Dr. Larry Ross Saxophone Play-Tests

This site is dedicated to the play-testing of vintage saxophones!

Project Abstract          animated sax

I am building a site for audio samples of saxophones from my collection. This is a NEW project, and it will take a few months to get all of the samples digitally recorded, and uploaded... This site will mainly be of interest to saxophone players, or people who are interested in learning to play: I highly recommend it!!! Note: sometimes the same song will be played on different horns, or on the same horn with a different mouthpiece/reed combination in order to demonstrate how various saxophones can sound. (It might seem odd, but this is how I have fun, so please humor me!)

For the first week in June 2009, I am uploading clips of various tenor and alto saxophones from my collection... (Note: remember to refresh your browser to see the updates.)

Here is an improvisational update that I did on 6/25/09, play-testing the Ida Maria Grassi Majestic tenor, which is in the Photo Gallery:

The Beaugnier, Paris Antoine Courtois Alto Saxophone 67xx:

This is one of my favorite horns of all-time! It has in INTIMATE dark tone, but it has cut-through highs as well! I have had three of these in my collection. Antoine Courtois successfully sued Adolphe Sax (credited with inventing the saxophone) for patent infringements, in the 19th century... Below, you can find my play-test of this vintage Parisian horn...
